CONCLUSION

Throughout this chapter we have put forward the view that the choice between public and private health care should be determined in relation to the priorities informing decisions about the pattern and volume of health care to be provided and in relation to the principles by which that health care is to be distributed amongst the members of our society. The sometimes implicit and sometimes explicit nature of our arguments has indicated that our preference is for the ideals of the NHS as opposed to the ideals of the private sector (Table 6.2), although we admit that these ideals have yet to be achieved (Table 6.3). Some private health care activity seems unavoidable, but there is little reason to believe that it will assist significantly in the achievement of NHS objectives.
